6. Before I leave the subject of Mr Sharp

I would

like to mention that his uncle the late Mr Granville

Sharp, who was the owner of much land in the City of

Victoria and an excellent landlord

who to

tenants

my personal observation while I was Captain

Superintendent or Police devoted muen of nis time

in visiting his property and in informing himself

as to the conditions in which his many Chinese

were living, bequeathed on his death the whole of

this property worth over $12,000,000, in trust, for

the building of the Matilda Hospital for the oare

and treatment of tas destitute and indigent

Europeans.

This Hospital of 26 beds nas conferred an immense boon

on the poorer classes of Europeans not only in this

Colony but in South Chins The property which forme

£rom endoment having increased in value of late

years, the surplus income is being devoted to the

building of an adjunct in the shape of a Maternity

Hospital, Kr. 1.H. Sharp is one of the Trusteen of

the Hospital.

It is however conceivable that you may consider that
